A few years ago my mother suggested that we work on an afghan together. She chose The Great American Afghan. The Great American Afghan is a collection of 25 squares, each independently designed. Each square is individually knit and then they are all seamed together and edged.

Since my mom lives in Colorado this project was an excellent choice and worked out beautifully. I chose the yarn and color scheme and we divided up the squares. It was so much fun to talk about the different squares as we knit them or solved a problem together. We both got to try a lot of new techniques on that adventure. When my mom finished her squares she mailed them to me. I assembled the afghan and worked the edging. It is one of my favorite blankets! Every time I snuggle under it, it is like getting a hug from mom.
