March 13-16 marks the second annual Philadelphia Yarn Crawl. A yarn crawl is an organized event geared toward fiber enthusiasts highlighting local fiber shops. Each shop offers special discounts, free patterns, and a raffle for the event. Some shops even offer a special colorway. It’s a fun way to learn about and visit local fiber stores. Each is unique, offering specific products or classes geared toward various fiber arts.

This year, I visited three of the sixteen shops participating. I started in Doylestown at Forever Yarn, then moved on to Twist in Lahaska, and ended my day by volunteering at Echo Valley Fiber in Wrightstown. Every store was welcoming and had beautiful yarn on display. I enjoy visiting each store to see the different yarn. Forever Yarn had beautiful yarn that was made in London, England. I didn’t purchase any, but I will look for it on our upcoming trip to London. Twist offers supplies for knitters, crocheters, and weavers. I have a small tabletop loom that I was gifted several years ago. I’ve used it a bit, but I would love to take a class to learn more about this art. I’ll be watching Twist’s class schedule to see if any weaving classes are coming up.
Echo Valley Fiber is my favorite shop that I visited. I love their wide selection of yarn, and the colors displayed. There is always a lot of yarn that has multidimensional colorways. I prefer to work with heathered or variegated colors, so I appreciate the variety. Gwen, the owner, was looking for volunteers to help during the Yarn Crawl. I volunteered some of my time and it was so much fun! I enjoyed talking to the other volunteers and patrons who came to participate in the Yarn Crawl and helping them navigate the store.
Next year, I would love to explore the yarn shops in Philadelphia. I’ve heard amazing things about them, but haven’t had the chance to visit them.
