Knitting Inspiration: Forest Ramble

theknottingway

I love the natural world and spend much time immersed in it.  I enjoy listening to bird songs, working in the garden, and feeling the crunch of dry leaves under my feet.  This is where I draw inspiration for my knitting patterns.  I use my experiences to try and provoke a particular feeling for each knitted item.

A winter landscape featuring bare trees, snow, and frozen lake.

The idea of the Forest Ramble vest was born from a winter walk.  The winter forest is invigorating and so different than during the height of summer with its lush foliage.  The bare branches of winter trees twist and cross each other creating a cabled canopy.  This is what I wanted to capture in the vest.  I used different cable patterns to mimic the beauty of winter’s bare tree branches.

I'm wearing the Forest Ramble vest that features an all-over cable pattern.

Vests are a great layering piece.  They add warmth without too much bulk.  Because Forest Ramble has an all-over cable design, I designed it as a vest instead of a sweater so it wouldn’t feel overly heavy and bulky.  I also used a sport-weight yarn for this reason.  Picking a yarn with a good stitch definition is also important for the cables to stand out.
